Background

The NeuroImpulse Protocol© or NIP, had its beginnings in the late 1980's as the need for a highly precise, gentle and neurologically effective technique to use with babies became more and more pressing. As the 1990's arrived, brain research began to be much to the fore and the subsequent flow of information became the stimulus for what has become an exponential explosion of knowledge in the application of orthodox clinical neurology to chiropractic.

The NIP knowledge base is expanding exponentially from year to year making the teaching programs become rapidly redundant and in need of restructure, while at the same time the many chiropractors who have pursued the original NIP Basic and NIP Advanced courses are now essentially well behind the expanding body of knowledge that is the NIP system.

It is principally for this reason that the management team at Kiro Kids have decided to offer our inaugural international symposium where delegates are free to choose attendance at any combination of the teaching modules they wish. This model of education is a huge step forward for Kiro Kids and NIP, and one we enter into with much excitement and anticipation.

In addition to the structured teaching modules, the symposium affords delegates the opportunity to engage in patient care with experienced NIP practitioners as well as providing a forum for the presentation of papers on developments in the field of applied clinical neurology with a focus on demonstrating how to integrate these findings into the NIP system.

Who Should Attend

The symposium is open to all chiropractors regardless of their previous exposure to NIP or their current competence to practice NIP. The symposium has been designed to accommodate all chiropractors at all levels of NIP understanding.

  • Option 1

Topics have been designed for new-to-NIP chiropractors and those wishing to get a refresher of the basic elements of the protocol.

  • Option 2

Topics are for those who feel they have mastered the basic elements of the protocol and seek to expand their knowledge base.

  • Option 3

Topics have been designed predominately for those chiropractors who regularly practice NIP and have mastered all the essential elements of the protocol.

Sessions

Thursday, October 7, 2010

8:30am - 9:15am
Chiropractic Philosophy - Forgotten Fundamentals

Presenter: Dr Neil J Davies

As chiropractic has been taken "helter skelter" down the path of so-called evidence based practice, the fundamentals of chiropractic philosophy, the "Why" of our science and art, has been brushed aside, ridiculed and marginalised in favour of an insipid pseudo-science that makes little sense when held up against the timeless and transilluminating principles of chiropractic. This international symposium will be opened with a powerful presentation reminding us of why we are chiropractors and systematically elucidating the foundational principles upon which chiropractic stands.

9:15am - 10:00am
The neurological basis of the subluxation

Presenter: Dr Neil D Cox

A detailed discussion of the principles of cortical dysafferentation and the neurological mechanisms involved in its genesis. The concept of precise patterns of dysafferentation and their hierarchical behaviour will be explored. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purrposes of references and to facilitate further study.

10:30am - 12:30am

There are 2 options for this session period:

  1. Option 1 - The Upper Cervical Complex in NIP

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Neil D Cox

A detailed, workshop driven presentation of the clinical assessment of the biomechanical and neuropathological reflections of cortical dysafferentation in the upper cervical complex. Colloquially referred to in NIP as "subluxation central" a thorough understanding of this complex area of the spine is critical to understanding NIP as a system of assessment and treatment as the five basic patterns of kinesiopathology and neuropathology direct the examiner to various parts of the body. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purrposes of references and to facilitate further study.

  2. Option 2 - The Shoulder Girdle in NIP

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Patrick McPhie

The shoulder girdle represents quite a diagnostic challenge for the NIP practitioner, involving as it does the contralateral cranial subluxation patterns, the scapula and clavicular subluxations at the acromioclavicular joint and the various vector permutations at the glenohumeral joint. A systematic study of the method of assessment and adjusting techniques will underpin this presentation which will rely heavily on multiple workshop sessions. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purposes of references and to facilitate further study.

1:30pm - 3:30pm

There are 2 options for this session period:

  1. Option 1 - The Upper Cervical Complex in NIP (continued)

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Neil D Cox

This is a continuation of the morning session.

  2. Option 2 - The Front of Body Subluxation in NIP

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Patrick McPhie

The structures of the front of the body from the upper cervical complex to the diaphragm are largely ignored in chiropractic, but not in NIP. The kinesiopathology and neuropathology which define subluxation of the hyoid, first rib, sternoclavicular joint and sternum will all be considered in this presentation. A systematic study of the method of assessment and adjusting techniques will underpin this presentation which will rely heavily on multiple workshop sessions. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purrposes of references and to facilitate further study.

4:00pm - 5:30pm

There are 3 options for this session period:

  1. Option 1 - The Lumbopelvic Region in NIP

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Patrick McPhie

The lower lumbar spine and pelvic structures are common ground for subluxation. Precise assessment of the lumbosacral junction and sacroiliac joints will direct the examiner to the most appropriate anatomical location to make the adjustment and will provide exact criteria for the direction of impulse application. A systematic study of the method of assessment and adjusting techniques will underpin this presentation which will rely heavily on multiple workshop sessions. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purrposes of references and to facilitate further study.

  2. Option 2 - Muscle Compartment Syndromes in NIP

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Neil D Cox

Muscle compartment syndromes are generally treated symptomatically in chiropractic, but not in NIP. As in all subluxation identification, kinesiopathology and neuropathology will be present in a precise pattern specific to the affected muscle and this must be identified before any impulse application is made. This presentation will focus on key muscles of the neck and shoulder girdle. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purrposes of references and to facilitate further study.

  3. Option 3 - The Cranial Connection in NIP

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Kimberley Tuohey

The diagnosis of the cranial subluxation in NIP is arrived at by identifying one of the four characteristic patterns of kinesiopathology and demonstration of the predictable patterns of neurological deficit. This presentation will offer a systematic study of the method of assessment and the application of neurologically precise adjusting techniques. Multiple workshop sessions will be conducted during this presentation to assist delegates to master the examtechniques. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual.

Friday, October 8, 2010

8:30am - 10:30am

There are 3 options for this session period:

  1. Option 1 - The Lumbopelvic Region in NIP (continued)

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Patrick McPhie

This is a continuation of the session from the previous day.

  2. Option 2 - Muscle Compartment Syndromes in NIP (continued)

Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies & Dr Neil D Cox

This presentation will be a continuation of the muscle compartment syndromes from the last session of the previous day.

This session will focus on the kinesiopathology and neuropathology related to the quadratus lumborum syndrome, the pelvic floor subluxation and muscles that act on the hip. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purrposes of references and to facilitate further study.

  3. Option 3 - Common Subluxation Patterns in Pregnancy

    Presenters: Dr Kimberley Tuohey

Pregnant women present particular diagnostic difficulties to the chiropractor, especially in third trimester and the immediate post-partem period. This presentation will focus on the common patterns of subluxation associated with this latter stage pregnancy, delivery and the post partum period many of which are uncommonly encountered in general practice. Modification of the NIP adjusting procedures to make them more suitable to the pregnant woman will also be demonstrated. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual.

11:00am - 1:00pm
Instructional Clinic for Delegates and Accompanying Persons

Presenter: Dr Neil J Davies, Dr Kimberley Tuohey, Dr Neil D Cox & Dr Patrick McPhie

This time has been set aside to provide NIP care for delegates and their accompanying friends, family and partners. All four presenters will be available to provide consultations during this time and delegates will be free to move between rooms to observe different clinicians at work. It is absolutely essential to make an appointment with the clinician of your choice with the administration desk upon arrival and registration. The appointment times will be 15 minutes.

Saturday, October 9, 2010

8:30am - 10:30am
The diaphragm and pubic symphysis subluxation in NIP

Presenter: Dr Neil J Davies

Grossly overlooked in chiropractic at large, the diaphragm and pubic symphysis subluxation is an important, if somewhat technically difficult area to assess and adequately treat. This presentation will cover all the currently known subluxation vectors and sub-categories, including the role of the rectus abdominus and transverse abdominal muscles. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual.

11:00am - 1:00pm

There are 3 options for this session period:

  1. Option 1 - Thoracic Spine and Rib Subluxations in NIP

Presenters: Dr Kimberley Tuohey & Dr Neil D Cox

Identification of the kinesiopathology and neuropathology associated with the thoracic and costovertebral subluxation will be presented in this session. This will also include the costochondral and chondrosternal subluxation patterns. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purposes of references and to facilitate further study.

  2. Option 2 - The lower Limb Subluxation in NIP

Presenters: Dr Patrick McPhie & Dr Neil D Cox

Identification of the kinesiopathology and neuropathology associated with subluxation of the hip, knee, ankle and foot will be presented in this session. Multiple workshop sessions will be conducted during this presentation to assist delegates to master the examination techniques. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purrposes of references and to facilitate further study.

  3. Option 3 - Organosensory Subluxations in NIP

    Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies

The organosensory subluxation is essentially a pattern of cortical dysafferentation which is triggered by what is presumed to be sensory facilitation arising from afferent fibres associated with the abdominal organs and their fibrous capsules. Systematic teaching coupled with multiple workshop sessions will be conducted during this presentation to assist delegates to master the examination techniques. Organosensory subluxation involving the diaphragmatic hiatus, the ileocaecal valve, liver, spleen, stomach, large intestine, bladder, uterus, ovaries and prostate will be considered. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual.

2:00pm - 5:00pm
Instructional Clinic using Patients from the Local Community

Clinicians: Dr Neil J Davies, Dr Kimberley Tuohey, Dr Neil D Cox & Dr Patrick McPhie

This time has been set aside to provide NIP care for patients drawn from the local community. All four presenters will be providing consultations during this time and delegates will be free to move between rooms to observe different clinicians at work. The appointment times will be at 15 minute intervals. Case discussion and question/answer time will take place at the conclusion of each consultation.

Sunday, October 10, 2010

8:30am - 10:30am

There are 3 options for this session period:

  1. Option 1 - The lower cervical spine subluxation in NIP

Presenters: Dr Kimberley Tuohey & Dr Neil D Cox

Identification of the kinesiopathology and neuropathology associated with the lower cervical subluxation will be presented in this session. A discussion of the concept of subluxation versus compensation, evidenced by a loss of normal mobility at a given spinal level with hypermobility at an adjacent segment will be given during this session. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purposes of references and to facilitate further study.

  2. Option 2 - The upper limb subluxation in NIP

Presenters: Dr Patrick McPhie & Dr Neil D Cox

Identification of the kinesiopathology and neuropathology associated with subluxation of the elbow, wrist and hand will be presented in this session. Multiple workshop sessions will be conducted during this presentation to assist delegates to master the examination techniques. The presentation will be supported by a full colour teaching manual and a DVD will be available from the administration desk for the purrposes of references and to facilitate further study.

  3. Option 3 - Case Studies and Special Case Scenarios in NIP

    Presenters: Dr Neil J Davies

This session will focus on some unusual subluxation patterns as well as identifying a number of clinical states that lead to the triggering of previously addressed patterns elsewhere in the body. Reactive muscles, cross reactive muscles, metal toxicity states and latent patterns made active only upon standing or stressing parts of the body. This session will help delegates with an advanced knowledge of NIP to develop skills to solve the most difficult and intransigent subluxation and symptomatic patterns.

11:00am - 12:00noon
Paper presentations by attending delegates

Moderator: Dr Neil J Davies

Delegates who have been previously invited to do so will be given the opportunity to present papers or case studies which illuminate one or more principles of NIP in general practice. Question/answer time will follow each presentation.

12:00noon - 1:00pm
Instructional Case Studies in NIP Subluxation Identification

Presenter: Dr Neil J Davies

This session will involve small group study of complex case presentations.
